Sport played an important part of my school years in Galway. I played hockey at school and club level, eventually climbing through the ranks to play for Connacht U16 and U18. I also rowed during my final years in Colaiste Iognaid and really enjoyed the circuit style training and running required to maintain a high level of aerobic fitness. When I began to study science at NUIG, I became more involved in watersports, particularly windsurfing.
I competed with the Irish Windsurfing Association at National Level, winning 1st in the Irish Women’s categories two years running. After completing a course in Outdoor Education, I instructed in various watersports centres around the country before emigrating to the sunnier climes of Maui, Hawaii in 2000. There I worked in the windsurfing industry for four years and it was during this time that I realised how a structured fitness program can not only enhance your sports abilities, but also improve your overall sense of well being and have a positive effect on your mental health. I knew that a career in fitness and health was for me, so in 2004 I returned to Ireland to do a degree in Sport & Exercise Science at the University of Limerick.
Since graduating in 2008, I have worked for the University Arena in Limerick and the NUIG Sports Centre. I enjoy working with individuals on a one-to-one basis because that level of attention is very time effective and is the best way to ensure results in terms of achieving a fitness goal. As a qualified fitness, Boxercise® and Indoor Cycling Instructor, I understand what motivates clients to break through their perceived barriers.
Science is the cornerstone for sound fitness and health advice so I will continue to develop my knowledge in the area of Sport & Exercise Science and strive to find new and exciting ways to implement that knowledge to practice.
